The Normans

When Duke William of Normandy came to England and defeated Harold, the Earl of Wessex, in the battle of Hastings in 1066, this was the end of the Anglo-saxon period and the Norman period began. Whats best remembered in the Norman period was the Domesday book, this was, in effect, the first national census, it was a royal survey of all England for administration and tax purposes.
